What is new on the Sting MX4

Talaria went through the Sting from end to end to create the Sting MX4. The headline upgrades are about 30% more power from an improved IPM motor and a larger 45Ah battery, but the list goes much further:

  • A completely redesigned forged frame that is lighter and more compact.
  • New front fork and rear shock for better control over rough ground.
  • Larger 220 mm brake rotors with a rotor guard.
  • A reinforced gearbox mount, peg brace and stronger chain.
  • Riser bars for a more comfortable standing position.
  • A 120A breaker to protect the electrical system.

The result is a bike that feels faster, stops harder and copes better with jumps and rough trails than any Sting before it.

Performance: 8,000W and 53 mph

The heart of the Sting MX4 is an 8,000W, 60V interior permanent magnet motor. IPM motors are efficient and power-dense, and Talaria has paired this one with an upgraded controller that manages power precisely and protects against overheating, interference and runaway throttle conditions.

Torque is instant. From a standstill the Sting launches hard, and out of tight corners it drives forward without the delay of a clutch or gearchange. Top speed is 53 mph, which is noticeably quicker than many bikes in the lightweight class and plenty for fire roads and open trails.

Smart regenerative braking feeds energy back to the battery as you slow down. You can adjust the regen level through the dash, choosing a gentle coast or a strong engine-braking feel depending on your preference and terrain.

The gearbox advantage

One of the biggest differences between the Talaria Sting and many of its rivals is the primary drive. Instead of a rubber belt between the motor and the chain, the MX4 uses a compact, precision-cut gearbox. It runs almost silently and is far more durable than a belt, which can wear out or be damaged by stones, grit and hard landings.

The gearbox is designed to last the life of the bike. The only routine service is an oil change every 600 miles, a quick and inexpensive job compared with replacing a worn drive belt. It is one less thing to worry about on a long ride far from home.

Battery, range and charging

The Sting MX4 runs on a 60V 45Ah lithium-ion battery built with LG 21700 cells and managed by a smart BMS. It is one of the largest batteries in the class and gives a claimed range of up to 75 miles in ideal conditions. Real trail range depends on rider weight, terrain, temperature and how hard you ride, and aggressive riders should expect considerably less.

The battery is easy to swap. Carry a fully charged spare and you can change packs in seconds to extend your ride. The included 12A charger works on both 110V and 220V and refills the battery in about 2.5 to 3.5 hours.

  • Let the battery cool after a hard ride before charging.
  • Store the bike at a partial charge if it will sit for a few weeks.
  • Avoid charging in freezing temperatures.
  • Use the supplied charger to protect the BMS and cells.

Frame, suspension and brakes

The Sting MX4 frame is made from 6061 aluminum alloy, forged under 6,000 tons of pressure for high tensile strength. It is compact and light, helping keep the complete bike to 145.5 lb while staying tough enough for jumps and rough trails.

DNM supplies the suspension. Up front, a lightweight inverted fork provides 7.87 inches of travel, while the rear uses a DNM shock with a multi-link, progressive linkage. Progressive leverage means the rear feels supple over small bumps but firms up on big hits, so the bike handles everything from rocky trails to jumps with confidence.

Titanium gold four-piston hydraulic calipers bite on larger 220 mm rotors, giving strong, consistent braking. A rotor guard protects the rear disc from rocks and debris.

The Sting MX4 rolls on 19-inch wheels with 70/100-19 front and 80/100-19 rear tires. Compared with the Surron Light Bee, the Sting has a longer wheelbase and more ground clearance, which adds stability at speed and helps when crossing logs and rocks.

OLED dash and smart features

The high-contrast OLED display is easy to read in bright sunshine and uses little power. It communicates with the battery and controller over a CAN connection and shows top and average speed, range, battery data, riding mode, regen level and error codes.

The dash is configurable too. You can set wheel and sprocket sizes if you change gearing, adjust regen and switch between mph and km/h. Even the throttle has been redesigned to protect its core components, so it keeps working if the tube takes an impact in a crash.

Talaria Sting MX4 vs Sting MX3 vs Surron Light Bee X

The MX4 is most often compared with its predecessor and with the bike that started the category. Here is how they line up.

If you want the latest Sting with the most power, the MX4 is the one to choose. If budget is the priority, the Talaria Sting MX3 is still a strong bike. The Surron Light Bee X is lighter, while the Talaria MX5 Pro steps up to a 72V battery for riders who want even more.

Who should buy the Sting MX4?

The Talaria Sting MX4 is a great fit if you:

  • Want a lightweight electric dirt bike with more power and range than a Light Bee.
  • Ride a mix of trails, private land and roads where a light kit is useful.
  • Prefer a durable gearbox drive over a belt.
  • Are a teen or adult rider up to about 220 lb.

Taller riders who want full-size wheels and more power should look at the Surron Ultra Bee or the Talaria Komodo.

Setting up the Sting MX4 for your size

A few simple adjustments help the Sting MX4 fit you properly. Start with the suspension: in your riding gear, check how far the rear settles when you sit on the bike, and adjust the shock preload so it sits roughly a third into its travel. Lighter riders will want less preload, heavier riders more.

Next, roll the riser bars to suit your height. Taller riders usually prefer them slightly forward for a natural standing position, while shorter riders roll them back for easier reach. Finally, set tire pressure for your terrain, a little lower for roots and rocks, a little higher for hardpack and pavement.

Riding the Sting MX4 on the street and the trail

Because it comes with a full light kit, the Sting MX4 is one of the more versatile bikes in its class. Riders use it to link trail networks with short road sections, to explore back roads, or simply to ride in low light with better visibility. On the trail, the light weight and compact geometry make it easy to place the bike exactly where you want it.

The higher top speed compared with older Stings also makes the Sting MX4 more relaxed on fast fire roads, while the stronger brakes and upgraded suspension give the confidence to carry that speed into rough sections.

Popular upgrades for the Sting MX4

The Talaria platform has a fast-growing aftermarket. Most owners start with tires suited to their terrain, then add hand guards and a skid plate for protection. A spare 45Ah battery is the most popular upgrade for riders who want longer days out, and gearing changes let you trade top speed for acceleration on tight trails.

Suspension tuning is worth considering once you know how you like the bike to feel, and performance controllers are available for experienced riders who want even more power. Start with the basics and add parts as your riding develops.

Why riders choose electric

Electric dirt bikes like the Sting MX4 are quiet, clean and instantly responsive. You can ride close to home without bothering anyone, there is no fuel to store or fumes to breathe, and full torque is always on tap. With so few moving parts, you spend far more time riding and far less time working on your bike.

Is the Sting MX4 street legal?

The MX4 we sell comes with a headlight, brake light, blinkers and reflectors, which covers much of the equipment many states require. Whether it can be registered for road use still depends on your state’s rules for registration, insurance and equipment, so check with your local DMV before riding on public roads.

Off-road, ride on private property with permission, at off-highway vehicle parks or on trails that allow dirt bikes. The American Motorcyclist Association is a great resource for finding legal riding areas and staying up to date with access rules.

Maintenance and running costs

Electric dirt bikes are cheap to run, and the MX4’s gearbox makes it even easier. Routine care includes:

  • A gearbox oil change every 600 miles.
  • Checking tire pressure and spokes before each ride.
  • Cleaning, lubing and adjusting the chain.
  • Inspecting brake pads and fluid.
  • Checking suspension and bolts after hard rides.

There is no fuel, no engine oil, no spark plug and no air filter, so most owners handle everything at home with basic tools.

Warranty

For 30 days after delivery, parts found to be defective from manufacturing can be replaced. The power system, including the motor, controller, display and battery, has a 12-month limited warranty, and the chassis, swingarm and other non-wear parts are also covered for 12 months. Wear items such as bearings, seals, chain, brake parts and suspension valving are excluded, as is damage from accidents, misuse, non-genuine parts, wiring changes or racing. Keep your proof of purchase, as the warranty is non-transferable.

Storing your bike between seasons

If you park your bike for the winter, a little preparation keeps it ready for spring. Clean it thoroughly, lubricate the chain, and store it somewhere dry. Charge the battery to around half and check it every few weeks, topping it up if it drops too low. Keep the battery indoors where temperatures stay above freezing, and add a little air to the tires so they do not develop flat spots.

Accessories to budget for

Most new owners set aside a little extra for a bike stand, a tire pressure gauge, a basic tool kit and quality riding gear. If you plan long days out, a spare battery or a second charger makes a big difference.

Riding tips for new owners

Start in a lower power setting while you get used to the instant torque, and practice smooth throttle control in an open area. Because the bike is so quiet, glance at the display more often to judge speed. Use the regen to help control speed on descents, and set your suspension sag before the first ride for the best handling.

Safety gear

With 53 mph on tap, always wear a DOT-approved helmet, goggles, boots, gloves and body armor. On shared trails, slow down around hikers, cyclists and horses, who may not hear an electric bike approaching.
